In 2025, the Villa Datris Foundation invites visitors to discover the work of 64 committed women artists from around the world, showcasing pieces that address major contemporary issues. Feminists, ecofeminists, human rights advocates, anti-racism activists, and champions of bodily autonomy — the selected artists are deeply engaged in ongoing and vital struggles. The exhibition highlights the invisibilization of women and the continued relevance of their fights, emphasizing the importance of protecting hard-won rights. ENGAGÉES also aims to raise awareness about the many battles that still need to be fought.
Indeed, for a long time, women artists were ignored and denied recognition, dominated by patriarchal societies and erased from art history. It wasn’t until the social movements and feminist struggles of the 1960s that they began to gain visibility — both as artists and as women. This legacy has profoundly influenced the artists of that era and those of subsequent generations, paving the way for greater acknowledgment of their demands and their art.
