Biography

Temandrota, whose birth name is Randriahasandratra Razafimandimby, was born in 1975 in Antananarivo, Madagascar, where he currently lives and works.

Raised in a family of hunters in the south of Madagascar, Temandrota has suffered from the kéré (famine caused by drought in the south of the island), an age-old tragedy that has been a driving force in his creative process. His art is strongly influenced by his Tandroy identity (people of the Androy region, the arid south of the Big Island), and he questions the traditional world, linked to orality and the land. The artist draws his inspiration from nature and the ambivalence of a modern society marked by its traditions.

The first winner of the Paritana Prize in 2017, the artist manipulates both recycled elements representative of consumer society and natural elements such as sap, sisal (also called Agave sisalana), soil or pigments of animal or plant origin. Temandrota’s work was part of the exhibition Madagascar, Arts de la Grande Île in 2018 at the Quai Branly Museum (Paris, France).
