Biographie

OZIOMA ONUZULIKE EST NÉ EN 1972 À ACHI, DANS L'ÉTAT D'ENUGU, AU NIGERIA. IL VIT ET TRAVAILLE À NSUKKA OÙ IL ENSEIGNE LA CÉRAMIQUE ET L'HISTOIRE DE L'ART ET DU DESIGN AFRICAINS À L'UNIVERSITÉ DU NIGERIA.

 

Ozioma Onuzulike est diplômé du département des beaux-arts et des arts appliqués de l'université du Nigeria, Nsukka. Il est également membre de la Fondation Civitella Ranieri, à Pérouse en Italie, où il a effectué une résidence dans le cadre de la bourse UNESCO-ASCHBERG pour les artistes. Il a aussi étudié dans la prestigieuse Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture aux États-Unis.

 

Artiste  céramiste et poète, son travail explore les origines historiques et sociologiques des troubles politiques et socio-économiques du continent africain, tout comme leurs conséquences sur la vie quotidienne. Ozioma Onuzulike s'intéresse à la nature esthétique, symbolique et métaphorique de l'argile qui est à l'origine de ses oeuvres. Son exploration autour de la matière -l'argile - se manifeste à travers la manière dont il la façonne - il la martèle, l'écrase, la broie, la découpe, la pince, la poinçonne, la perfore, la brûle et la cuit - pour créer les multiples pièces qui donneront vie à la composition finale de ses oeuvres.

 

L'artiste a eu une exposition personnelle institutionnelle intitulée Seeds Yams of Our Land au Centre d'art contemporain (CCA) de Lagos, au Nigeria, en 2019, ainsi qu'une présentation de son recueil de poésie du même titre, également publié par le CCA. Les œuvres d'Ozioma Onuzulike faisaient partie de l'exposition  Entanglements : Colonial Collections in Decolonial Times tenue au musée d'archéologie et d'anthropologie de Cambridge. Son travail a également été présenté lors de foires internationales comme le Armory Show à New York, 1-54 London, artgenève et Art Brussels.
